My Attempt at Watercolour Painting

I hadn’t done the challenge in a while over on Collage Obsession so I thought I would check it out this week.  It of course was another difficult one for me (as most are) because it was “night”.  Most of my stuff is cheery, sunshine kind of stuff.  It did, however, remind me of a piece I was supposed to start for an on-line class I was doing a while back called The Art of Wild Abandonment taught by Junelle Jacobson.  I hadn’t realized when I signed up for it but a lot of the class is sketching and watercolours.  Two of my least favourite mediums as I am not good with sketching and watercolour doesn’t have enough colour saturation for me.  So, I did the first sketch, which was of radishes and painted it using my watercolour crayons.

Then I had to do another incorporating the radishes.  (Why radishes you ask?  Junelle lives on a farm, a huge farm filled with adorable sheep so she likes to create from what she sees.)

Then once this was done, I was done, haha.  I put it aside for a while as it wasn’t keeping me engaged.  So, this need to create a “night” picture brought me back to this class (thankfully it is open for a year and was available to go back to).  So, I sat down for my third attempt and created this using watercolour pencils this time.

Although not my  best work, I enjoyed the process much more this time and will definitely be more motivated to finish the class.  I think maybe because I used a few more elements then just the watercolours.  I pulled out my Faber Castell PITT pens to do some shading and used my black pens for more doodling.  I randomly drew only 5 owls as the sample had at least 7.  We have 5 people in our family so each one represents one of us.  I called it “Just Hanging Out”.

I had bought a journal specifically for this class and got a couple extras for my shop which I made special book marks for.  The pages have great texture but aren’t for watercolour.  I used it anyway, but just a little tip for those wanting to try out watercolours, make sure you don’t work it too much as you will tear right through the paper.
