Monday Journal – Adventure Awaits

I did this background last week when I felt the need to create but wasn’t sure what I felt like doing.  I just used an old school plastic placemat for the background, a 6×6 mushroom stencil that I kept flipping over and moving around to get the grouping and added the title “Adventure Awaits”.

I am not sure if you have heard of Messy Nessy Chic but I totally feel like Nessy is a kindred spirit.  She writes from her little pad in Paris and I have yet to see an article she has written that I couldn’t wait to read.  She loves old photographs and abandoned places so you can just imagine what she finds wandering the streets of Paris (so jellie!) .  When The House at the end of the Street  popped up in my Facebook feed, as usual, I couldn’t help but click over to read it.  It is about this graphic designer named Matthias Jung who creates these surreal and whimsical houses through collage.  I immediately grabbed my journal and began to draw.

This house inspired…

My little house on the mushroom, which led to an entire little village.

This one was very Grand Budapest Hotelish.

Which inspired this little guy.

Last but not least, this really cool one inspired…

the shape of this one.  All the houses had to be pretty small to fit on the mushrooms so I felt a little limited.  But it definitely was a lot of fun.

Milah had an hour and 45 min appointment today as she was getting her braces on which gave me the perfect opportunity to bring my journal and finish it up.  The time flew by!!!

Sometimes you don’t need to go far to go on an adventure, just open up your art journal.

Monday Journal – Community Art Journal Page

This week I wanted to do something to honour the group of amazing ladies I met doing an on-line course through Kelly Rae Roberts.  I thought I would do a community art journal page.  This community of women has been wonderful to each other right from day one.  Being a part of a group of like minded artists with similar business goals was a gift all on its own but the way everyone jumps in to offer unconditional support (especially with the difficult things life throws at us) has been pretty special.  They are all like a warm blanket on a cold day.

With Spring here (or attempting to be here, the sun was out today, YEY!) I thought I would use some brighter colours.  I stretched myself a little and used pinks and yellows which I tend never to gravitate towards.  I grabbed papers from my scrap stash and ripped different shaped houses and then applied them with an artist’s medium.

I then used my navy sludge to paint the night sky.  Why is it night time in my community?  Not sure, maybe it’s because I tend to catch up with them at night once the kids are in bed, haha.  I applied drops of yellow India ink to represent stars (and the ladies).

I outlined each of the houses with a watercolour crayon and painted the houses or just the edges to give the paper a more painted effect.  A couple of them it was to add colour as the paper was white.

I re-emphasized and added texture with the word “community” down one of the houses with some mini alphabet stickers. ( I add medium over any stickers I use when painting, btw).

What is a neighbourhood without flowers?  I added some Miss Carolina rub-ons from My Mind’s Eye to add a little greenery and finishing touches.

Last but not least I took a white china marker, (that will basically write on anything)…

and wrote out the definition of community as it relates to my ladies.  Here it is finished.

Strange as you get older and maybe wiser, you realize the importance of community.  Have any of you found that as well?

Sunday Journal – House Mixed Media

I had bought an awesome Doorways Chipboard Set from Maya Road knowing that I would use them in a house mixed media piece.  I then came across this “Behind the Art” tutorial from Christy Tomlinson using her September mixed media kit which incorporated those very doors.

It is so crazy to me how similar mine and Christy’s style is, anyway, I decided to do up a piece just like it in my art journal.   Here is what I came up with. I even had a couple of the Sew Stampers that I have been dying to use.  I used different papers of course and added a chipboard tree that I inked up with a Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam called ”Dirty Martini”.

I didn’t have any of the Tim Holtz number plates so I made my house numbers myself (I kind of prefer that they are all different).  For this first one, I used an oval chipboard piece I painted white and added number stickers and two silver brads on each side.  I also used paper strips for the roof on this one instead of the washi tape.

For this one I used a linen tag, greens brads and number stickers again.  I did apply a layer of matte medium over top to make sure the numbers would adhere to the fabric.  I am in love with this polka dot washi tape.  The “Home Sweet Home” rub-on is from Seven Gypsies.

I pulled out a couple of my Unity stamps to add some depth.  I used the grass stamp with paint instead of ink to make the grass all along the bottom.  I also dabbed my Reverse Punchinella stamp in black to create some texture on the page.

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  It was definitely too short for me!!!

PS.  Take some time for yourself this week and get creative, it is good for the soul!

Italian Week

It’s Italian Week in Ottawa and I am super excited to check out all the yummy food and culture over the weekend.  Here is the schedule for the weekend in case you want to check it out.

It is also the kick-off weekend for the Preston Street Mercado, woooooo!!!!  It is from 10am to 5pm just off of Preston on Young Street.  It is right next the queensway bridge.  The market will be Saturday and Sunday.  I have a few new pieces.  Here is a sneak peak..

I love mushrooms, so cute!!!  Check out the dancing peeps…

I also did these two birdie pieces.

Hope to see you there!!

Some Girlie Pieces

I thought I might post a couple of mixed media pieces I finished. Felt a bit unnatural to leave the border white, but went with it anyway. Tres pink, which is not like me, but I love the way they turned out.
