Monday Journal – Vintage Mixed Media

The beginnings of my vintage mixed media art journal layout…

I went to the grocery store the other day to find some veg to go with our dinner and was super excited to find local beets for sale. I grabbed a bag and threw them in my cart. When I was home and slicing them up (to toss in olive oil and spices then grill in the oven), my hands of course became bright red from the juice. I immediately thought, hey I could use this as a stain. So, off I went to pull out my art journal. Dinner would just have to wait a moment, haha. I immediately opened it up to the page I was building on and rubbed the beet ends all over which gave it a redish purple stain effect that I quite liked.

This helped me decide to use red and blue for these pages, I already knew I wanted it to be an ode to vintage. I then slapped on the paint quite thickly in random spots and then pressed punchinella into it to create texture and pattern.

I love the pattern it created on my hand. Nothing like getting messy = happiness.

I wanted to keep this one fairly simple, all I did after was cover it with vintage images and rub-ons.

The girl with the umbrella is one of my favourites from the Graphics Fairy and so is the bike. The cute little chair was a Micheals rub-on.

I usually outline everything in black but because the background was fairly dark I decided to outline everything in white. I used a Stabilo coloured marking pencil (they write on anything). Here is the image once I outlined it. Not a huge difference, but I like it better. I am a details person :)

I added an image of an old clock I pulled from a vintage photography book.

On the insert I used the punchinella as a stencil. Then more rub-ons and a title “the Good Stuff” because the old stuff really is the good stuff.

Birthday Workshop – Community Mixed Media

Last weekend I had the pleasure of teaching at Marie-Pierre’s (MP) 30th birthday party. She was very involved in the planning of the piece which I LOVED. That way I knew she was going to get something she liked. Sometimes it is hard trying to decide on a piece when you don’t know a person very well. I could tell that her relationships were important to her so I did a community mixed media piece.

Here is everyone jumping right in.

I was pretty excited and surprised to find out that half of the guests were guys. That has never happened. I am lucky if there is one male and he is usually a brother or a spouse who has been forced into it, haha. Not with this crowd. This was a very creative crew who didn’t need to be coerced at all.

So very focused and precise, awesome!!

It is so great because you can see the personalities behind each one. The bottom is the birthday girl’s and the top is her sister Christine’s crazy haired girl.

The bottom right corner of this one is Alice in Wonderland themed. All of the people have roots for feet to represent MP establishing roots as an adult.

Such a great bunch, they were staying and continuing the party with some drinks, yummy food and karaoke. So fun!!

Burlington Art Walk, Vermont, this Friday!!

Man, does time ever fly by. This Friday, like two sleeps from now I will be heading to Vermont with a few of my girls for the weekend and the Burlington Art Walk. It will be my first international art show and it is at the amazing Vintage Inspired Lifestyle Marketplace. I had done a post a little while back about discovering it and meeting the lovely Mary, who is the owner. I am pretty excited!!

My family was supposed to be coming with me and we were going to make it a mini vacation but things came up and it has turned into a girls weekend. I am a little sad the fam won’t be with me but getting to hang out with my girls should be a blast. Everything just kind of came together at the last minute and I was lucky a few were able to come.

Anyway, I just wanted to share a couple more completed Goddess girls. The first is a steampunk themed one called “The Adventurer” I started with a Graphic 45 tissue paper which I layered orange paint over. I then covered it with some Tim Holtx masks and some chipboard gears which I made with my Cuttle Bug and a Tim Holtz die, which I then applied white paint to.

Once I was done using the gears as masks, I painted them black and used them in the piece as part of her dress and in the balloon. Here she is with her little corset dress and short bangs.

I really grunged up some flowers with black sprays and ink for her dress. I also used more gears from the Tim Holtz Idea-ology collection.

An old tag and domino from my collection just finished off the corner of the piece.

And the quote…

The second piece started with Christy Tomlinson tissue paper. Love her stuff and her, as a matter of fact.

Added some pink doilies, blue chevrons and a couple other elements with stencils and off I went. This one came together in one sitting. Love those days when the creativity just flows.

Here she is finished, I called it “Sweetness”.

Brings me back to the sweetness of youth, with the wind blowing in my hair and not a care in the world.

DIY Easter Eggs – Just in time for Easter

I’m sure everyone is looking forward to the amazingly long weekend ahead (for those that get both Friday and Monday off). No getting up early or making lunches, woooo!! These DIY Easter eggs are a great little holiday project to do with your kids or by yourself. I picked up some foam eggs from the dollar store. All they had were the small ones but I wasn’t fussy.

I grabbed some tissue paper that I had in my stash and ripped it into smaller pieces…

I then applied a layer of acrylic medium (you can use Modge Podge or Decoupage, whatever you have) then put the tissue paper over the eggs and another layer of medium over top to seal it in. I wasn’t super careful applying it or anything as I love all the wrinkles and texture it makes. This is a bit of a messy job and you can’t over handle them because the tissue will start to stick to your fingers.

Once they were thoroughly dry, I applied Titan Buff (which is an off white colour) with a bit of water (to make it more translucent) to all of the eggs. For this guy I had started with an old dress pattern, then the paint, then blue ink and finished it off with a stamp from Tim Holtz’s line Stamper’s Anonymous. I used this Little Labels set for all the eggs because the print size was appropriate for these little eggs.

This one already had plenty of colour so I just added a bit of paint and some black text. Don’t you just love polka dots??

This one started with the cream swirly paper which was a bit dull so I added some yellow India Ink to it and the pointing finger from Tim’s line. The circle stamp was from my basket of background stamps so I’m not sure where I got it.

This one just had plain pink paper so I added a bit more paint to it then the others to tone it down a little and the black text.

Here they are together in a vase with some raffia. I will put a couple of these on my Easter dinner table on Sunday to spruce it up a bit.

An easy and fairly quick (except for the drying time in between stages) project you can get done in time for Easter and they won’t stink up the house if one accidentally rolls under the couch and is forgotten. Plus, you can keep them for next year!! I would love to see pics if you try them yourself.

Collage Obsession Challenge – “I Can Fly!”

Since I hadn’t participated in a bit I thought I would head over to the Collage Obsession Challenge and see what it was for the week. As soon as I saw that it was “I can fly”, it instantly made me think of the commission piece I needed to finish for this wonderful lady who can fly and often does.

Her word of the year is CHANGE. Just like mine. When she saw my finished change piece that I made to remind myself throughout the year, she asked if I could make her one as well. I made the change on her piece much bigger.

This will serve as a little reminder for her that she CAN FLY on the days she is just not feeling it along with keeping her on track with the change she is wanting in her life for this year. A little spiritual kick in the pants. I think we can all use it sometimes. The power of positive thinking is an amazing thing. You can see the little caterpillar under the words, that change into the butterflies above.

I used Golden Glass Bead Gel mixed with brown paint for this part. I usually mix it with ink. I am not sure which I like better. Either way provides lots of texture but you can’t really see all the beads in this one. Might just be the dark colour though.

I can’t believe how quickly it came together. Was able to finish it while the little muffin was napping, now that is quick. I think that it helps that the person I was making it for is a pretty amazing and inspiring woman.

I hope she enjoys it. Now I just need to get it to the lovely Louise unless I keep it and switch it out for mine, haha. I like this one much better :).

Goddess – Dreamer Mixed Media

The painting continues :) I have been feeling incredibly inspired which I am grateful for in more ways than one. I finished my Dreamer mixed media girl. For the background paper I started with old maps as this girl likes to dream of traveling. Topped them with turquoise (my go-to colour). Then added a little brown paint with a stencil.

Love how the heart mask I used with red paint turned out. I added an arrow pointing to the stars and wings as she also dreams of flying.

Here she is finished. Added a star to shoot for (on the left) and little flip to her hair.

The beautiful green feathery flower is from Webster’s Pages. Accessories are a must.

I added texture with paint and stamps (with black Staz-on ink). The background stamp with all the small square images was a total score from a sale bin at Michaels. The artwork on the front of the wood block didn’t do it justice so it turned people off I think. Worked out for me, YEY!! Perfect example of sometimes needing to look beyond what someone has presented to you. I added the “DREAMER” title with rub-on letters.

I added a little organza rose ribbon trim for her belt with a ribbon charm both from Maya Road. She also needed a tulle skirt as what dreamer doesn’t like to dance?

It’s Friday tomorrow, wooo!! Hope you all have juicy plans to bring out your inner goddess.

Mermaid Mixed Media Piece for Goddess Series

This fun mermaid mixed media piece is entitled “The Siren”. In Greek Mythology a siren is One of a group of sea nymphs who by their sweet singing lured mariners to destruction on the rocks surrounding their island. The definition of siren is A woman regarded as seductive and beautiful. I think we all have a little siren within us ;)

I started with a beautiful fish paper (that I picked up at Stuff Store when we were in Lakefield) that I ripped into strips to try and mimic the idea of waves.

I then rubbed some blue paint on with my fingers in sections to make it look like water. I also added three silvery medallions to the right with a vintage plastic doily. My go-to stencil.

I then rubbed some white paint over the medallions so you could see the texture a little more. I love using vintage book pages for my bodies. I then top them with a light pink water colour or rub a Faber Castell Big Brush Pen over it. For this one I used the Big Brush.

The crazy ginger hair is an ode to our youngest. I can also imagine her having a bit of an attitude, haha. I added touches of white paint with a number stencil and some textured drawer liner. I love using things I have around the house to create depth.

For the tail I cut a template out of plain white paper then applied the chevron paper that was cut with a circle punch to create the look of scales. I then trimmed it to the shape of the tail and applied it with medium.

I hope someone loves having her as much as I did making her.

Flower Mixed Media Piece for Goddess Series

As I continue to work on my Goddess series, I thought I would do a post about each of the larger pieces so that when they find a home people can come to check out a little of how each girl was created. I also help to inspire you a little as well :)

My Delicate Flower mixed media girl likes to hide behind the beauty of her garden. For the background, I started with this beautiful tissue like paper I found at Deserres. (If you have never been, you should really check them out. They have the most beautiful selection of papers and tons of art supplies. Lots of projects for the little ones as well.) I cut the paper up in sections as it is always easier to apply then one huge sheet.

The flowers were then cut from scraps of paper I had in my stash from a Sizzix Flower Layers Die. I inked the edges of the petals to further define them, then topped them with a little white pearl.

Although shy, this girl definitely has some personality with this showy dress and headpiece. Can’t forget to outline everything with a fluid black pen.

What is a garden without a butterfly? It is atop the outline left behind from using one of my go-to vintage plastic doilies that I love using as stencils.

Some background stamps in black ink here and there and the piece is complete.

Love her and how quickly she came together. Maybe I should have had a little more contrast with the background? What do you think?

Song Bird Mixed Media

I have been using my art as therapy, which has been working pretty well, except I have been having a hard time focusing on what to do first. This is a bit of a problem as I have an art show and class coming up at the beginning of April in Vermont and need to get cracking on my Goddess series. So, I thought I would head over to the Collage Obesession website and see what the challenge was for the week. EGGS. Perfect, I thought, I shall work on my Song Bird mixed media piece I had been planning for the series.

I started with tearing out pages from a vintage bird book I received from my in-laws and covered the entire canvas with it. Then covered it with a mixture of red and fuchsia paint. I had a vision of what I wanted it to look like, but was a little afraid to just start. Kind of unlike me. Feeling a little shaky lately I guess. I grabbed some stencils and jumped in. Here is a work in progress picture.

Here is the piece in it’s entirety. It is a bit of an ode to my oldest daughter. She has always loved music and will sing everywhere and anywhere if given the opportunity. Such a free spirit, I love it.

She has blond hair just like Milah but this Goddess has birdcage pony tails like no other.

I gave her a dress of real bird feathers and nest with eggs head piece to complete the look :)

I finished it off with a Maya Angelou quote “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song”.

Collage Obsession Challenge – Time Mixed Media

After the chaos that was our vacation I thought I should take a few minutes for some creative time. I headed over to the Collage Obsession site to see what the challenge was for the week to get a little inspiration. So, off I went to create a Time Mixed Media piece. I knew I wanted to start with these vintage Pennsylvania Railway cards I got off of E-bay. Aren’t they cool?

I prepared a few canvases at once, which is a great time saving idea and reduces waste of supplies. I layered the cards, some vintage book pages and sheet music and then covered them with a fluid acrylic in Titan Buff. It is close to the colour of the paper and I just applied it with my finger so as not to cover up too much of the papers. I really wanted them to show through.

This was my “Time” piece. Elephants playing on top of a clock, seems possible doesn’t it? haha. I incorporated the elephants as our youngest Amelia seems a little obsessed with them lately.

I added this oh so true quote on it.

While I was in the groove, I thought I would create a couple extra finished pieces with the backgrounds I had done. Here is the proud rooster strutting his stuff enjoying his journey high atop this bike he found in the farm yard.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner I thought I would incorporate hearts into this one. Isn’t she a little cutey?

I am loving the monochromatic look of these with just little pops of colour. I think I shall do a few more.
